87-Thunderbird Hardtop
Z-390ci 4bbl 315hp V8
In 1964, the Thunderbird underwent a major restyling, adopting a more squared-off design, most noticeable from the side and rear. The model retained its distinctive grille with quad headlights and kept the 113.2" wheelbase. The lineup still offered hardtop, convertible, and Landau versions, powered by the familiar 390ci V8 and a 3-speed automatic transmission. By 1965, notable updates included sequential turn signals and standard front disc brakes. Though 1966 marked the final year of the fourth-generation Thunderbird, it received a fresh look with a new egg-crate grille featuring a prominent central emblem, a single-blade front bumper, and full-width taillights.
This 1966 model, affectionately known as a "Flair Bird," was a departure from its predecessors, the "Bullet Bird" and the "Square Bird." Its styling drew comparisons to Lincoln's high-end luxury cars rather than Ford’s working-class lineup. The fourth-generation Thunderbird introduced bold styling lines and intricate trim that elevated its presence. This particular car remains largely original, with recent maintenance keeping it in good shape. It retains much of its factory interior and was equipped with an array of options, making it a turn-key cruiser ready for the road.
The car sports a resprayed Sauterne Gold exterior (paint code Z) and what appears to be the original Town Landau roof. It's in good condition, with only minor imperfections such as chips, bubbles, and some bodywork on the lower panels. The classic turbine-style Thunderbird hubcaps cover steel wheels, wrapped in nearly new 205/75R15 thin whitewall tires. The interior retains its original green vinyl bucket seats up front and a rear bench with a fold-down armrest. The jet-age-inspired centre console, complete with a glovebox and 1960s-era cigarette setup, flows past the seats and features wood veneer accents housing the window controls.
Under the hood, the Thunderbird is powered by the reliable 390ci V8 engine, producing 315hp, paired with a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The rear wheels are driven by a Ford 9" 3.00:1 ratio conventional differential. The engine bay features blue-painted valve covers, a newer Holley Street Warrior 4-barrel carburettor, and a matching blue single-snorkel air cleaner.
